- Embossed at 40 mm in clay
The original was drawn in 1974 by someone whose name nobody kept, and it had been redrawn nine times by nine suppliers since. No two versions matched, and the tile press had been given whichever one arrived most recently.
Three bricks in a stretcher bond, which is what the company has made since the first kiln. I went back to a photograph of the 1974 letterhead, rebuilt the bond on a grid, and corrected the two optical errors that had crept in around 2003 - the top brick had drifted a full millimeter off center. Nothing about it looks new, which was the entire point.
Delivered with a comparison sheet showing the nine versions against the rebuilt one, and a tolerance note for the press: the emboss needs 0.8 mm of relief or the joints fill.
