A single-route passenger ferry with two boats, four stops and no budget for repainting anything twice. The mark had to read from the far bank, from the gangway, and on a paper ticket.
An arc crossing a horizontal rule: the wake, and the water it is made in. At hull scale the arc reads as a wave; on a ticket it reads as a bridge between two banks, which is the same idea in a different register. White on the dark hull, dark on everything else, one drawing and one reverse.
The system includes a stop-sign layout, a timetable grid, and the note that made the difference: the mark sits at a fixed height above the waterline, not centered on the hull, so it stays level whatever the loading.
