Havenmuseum

A harbor museum with a new building, a hundred-year-old collection and a naming problem: every obvious maritime symbol in the city was already taken. We went looking for something specific to this quay rather than to the sea in general.

The mark is a mooring hook with its two ropes still on it, drawn as three strokes of one weight. It works punched through the exterior sign band, as a wayfinding token at twelve millimeters, and as a repeating unit along the ticket stubs.

The system extends to twenty-two pictograms drawn on the same grid and a rule sheet the front-of-house team keeps behind the desk. Two years on, nothing has been redrawn.
